Ferrari have announced the Ferrari Portofino, their newest GT car, replacing the California GT. The name Portofino is taken from an Italian resort town, with all the necessary connects to luxury.

Ferrari claim that the Portofino is more than just an upgraded California. Along with a substantial reinvention of the exterior panels, the chassis is all-new and the V8 turbocharged engine has had an engineering, software and power upgrade.

The car now produces 600PS power, (40 more than on the California did) and can do the standing 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds.

The undercarriage has lost weight, the body is more rigid torsionally and the proportions seem to have been reworked to lend the car a more aggressive front end while still accommodating the foldaway hardtop roof at the rear.

The car has been designed by Ferrari’s inhouse design team and the result is a car that looks wider and more planted. New elements have been used in the design, like the air intake along the edge of the all-new LED headlights that is used to channel air into the wheel arches and out along the fenders, reducing drag.

The tail aspect also gets more width, useful to accommodate the retractable hardtop.

The engine itself has gone through some significant upgrades. Now the exhaust headers are cast in one-piece, reducing weight and increasing efficiency, while refining the approach to zero lag on the turbo. In addition the engine also gets new pistons and con-rods.

The Ferrari Portofino also gets the third generation of rear electronic differential (E-Diff3) that is matched with the F1-Trac transmission to heighten the handling performance. Steering has been upgraded to electric power steering, reportedly offering quicker response with full feedback and the car gets the magnetorheological damping system (SCM-E) with a new dual-coil setup. The result is an even more dynamic, responsive car that also delivers superior ride comfort.

The cabin has also been upgraded with a new 10.2″ central display, new power seats, a new steering wheel and a redesigned backrest that improves legroom for the rear seats. And the front passenger gets a passenger display, similar to the unit on the GTC4Lusso.
