Marquez pulls off last lap run to regain MotoGP lead at San Marino

The race at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli was set to be a scorcher, with the top three contenders for the championship on the front row. And it proved to be just that despite torrential weather and a surprise challenge from the outfield.

However, the race ended with Marc Marquez pulling off a brilliant last lap that saw him overtake Danilo Petrucci of Octo Pramac Racing, who had managed to pull off that initial overtake manoeuvre that put him ahead of Maverick Viñales at the start, which had Lorenzo leading from Marquez and Dovizioso.

Petrucci built on that initial start and took down both Dovizioso and Marquez over the series of laps and it was a lucky break that saw Jorge Lorenzo make an error on turn 6 that put Petrucci in the lead.

Dovizioso seemed to realise that maintaining points was more important than challenging for the lead and dropped back, while it was left to Marc Marquez to make his challenge on Petrucci on the final lap at Turn 1, holding the lead into the flag.

This puts Marquez back level with Dovizioso on the points at 199 each, although he technically leads with better placings.

Marquez said, “This was one of the best races of my career. It gave me an amazing feeling because it required incredible concentration to manage the tension the whole time. It was very easy to make a mistake, and that’s why I decided to attack only on the final lap. That lap was amazing; I took many risks, but with such a close season, it was worth trying to get the five extra points for the win. Of course I was thinking about the Championship the whole race. At the beginning the feeling wasn’t so good, probably because there was so much water on the track, and I had a couple of very scary moments. Lorenzo was amazingly fast early on, and so was Danilo later when he took the lead after Jorge’s crash, but I was able to follow him and finally to attack.”
