Mercedes-Benz Oman launched the new Mercedes-Benz S-class at the unique Muscat Bay location. The gala event was laid out as an evening during which special invitees also saw the facilities on offer from Muscat Bay, nicely tied in with the launch of the newest edition of the premium sedan from Stuttgart.
Speaking at the occasion, Lawrence Good, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Oman said, “What I can say is that in every S-class we have launched, we have set innovations and benchmarks that other manufacturers try to have them in following years. We lead the way – ABS, Airbags, Suspension control, all first endowed on the very top Mercedes-Benz product.” He added about the car, “The S-class makes history time and time again, not just by setting standards, but by raising it in ways that are unimaginable.”
The S-class gets a thorough freshening up of its exterior, with new lighting and signature LED DRLs. In addition the car debuts new powertrain options. The new S560 gets a V8 engine with 469hp and 700Nm of torque from its biturbo boost. The engine gets cylinder deactivation to reduce fuel consumption when cruising – including intelligent valve control to reduce waste gassing. The turbochargers also move to the inside of the V to reduce the losses from the exhaust path. Later on this year a hybrid version called the 560e will be offered with a 13.3kWh battery and an electric-only range of 50 kilometres.
The Mercedes-Benz S-class also debuts ‘intelligent drive’ combining features from the active steer assist, active brake assist and evasive steer assist. The system also debuts a high-tech method of priming occupants ears for an impending crash.
Chassis improvements have been linked to higher degree of control of the suspension, allowing the car to compensate for speed breakers as well as to offer CURVE, a system that actively banks the car in turns in order to reduce centrifugal forces felt by the occupants.
The S-class also gets a new steering wheel that offers controls that respond to capacitive input, including swipes like on tablets and phones.
The AMG versions of the S-class that will be on offer include the S63 4MATIC+ and the S65. The former gets a new 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine, replacing the 5.5-litre V8 biturbo. The output is now boosted to 612hp and 0-100km/h sprint takes only 3.5-seconds. The gearbox is also a 9-speed sports transmission.
The S65 gets the 6.0-litre V12 engine along with 630hp output and 1,000Nm of torque. AMG has also adapted the suspension control to offer Magic Body control, ensuring a magic carpet ride. The V12 unit is also offered on the Maybach S650 variant.
The base version on offer is now the S450 with a 3.0-litre V6 with 367hp and 500Nm on tap.
