As part of the electrification portfolio of new cars by 2019-2020, Volkswagen has confirmed that at least three electric cars will start hitting showrooms by late 2019. These vehicles will fall under the I.D branding and will consist of a hatchback, a MPV and the crossover SUV/CUV. Till now, I.D. concepts have been shown and the first to hit the production line will be the I.D. Crozz, according to Volkswagen.
Volkswagen’s newly created MEB global platform will serve as the basis for all of VW’s electric offerings.
Unique features and the ability to accommodate future technology applications are core to the design and engineering of these products. For instance, I.D. cars will feature steering wheel that collapses into the dashboard and front seats that swivel toward the back passengers, ready for autonomous driving when the technology and the regulations permit it.
Volkswagen has released a few technical details of these EVs. They will be powered by 300 hp electric motors [combined output]. Each axle gets a motor in the all-wheel drive versions. A 111KW/h battery will help the vehicles reach up to 480km driving range. The I.D. Crozz gets coupe-like side profile and dimensions similar to the compact Tiguan SUV.
At the LA show where the cars are being displayed, Hinrich J. Woebcken, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America said: “The I.D. Crozz-based electric vehicle will be an affordable and stylish electric SUV and there is more to come.”
