Mercedes-Benz has revealed its third generation luxury coupe – the 2018 Mercedes-Benz CLS brings the new styling of the brand that connects with the Mercedes-AMG GT concept and the familiar swooping profile of the brand’s four-door coupe together, along with a host of platform changes.

The car continues with the frameless windows that open up its profile, a deep cut grille and the muscular rear shoulder line. The interiors benefit from the cross-platform adoption of a large horizontal panel from the S-class and the elaborate redesign of the console and driver’s environment. The ambient lighting spreads to lit air-conditioning vents, offers 64 tones and 10 themes and adds in two effects as well.

The car also brings in the new Wellness package called Energizing comfort control that integrates various car systems to boost the occupant wellness. This includes six programs that use seat temperature and massage functions, steering wheel heating, air temperature and fragrance together with the ambient lighting and music to influence the driver and occupants.

All the driver assistance packages available on the S-class make their presence here too, including Active Brake Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Attention Assist, Speed Limit Assist and even an addition to Pre-Safe that factors in the potential of sound injury during a crash.

Optionally, the system extends to Distronic, active steering assist, evasive steering assist and active lane keeping assist. Active lane changing assist is also improved.

Seating has been changed, with both the rear outer seats resembling their front row counterparts, while the car actually gets a fifth seat in the middle of the rear row for the first time.

Suspension layout is four-link at the front and five-link at the rear with optional dynamic body control or air body control with settings that cover Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus.

Engine offering on the CLS 450 4Matic is a 367hp inline six-cylinder engine with 500Nm of torque and an additional 22hp and 250Nm of torque on offer from its EQ boost in-line motor assist. The system is still a 48 volt one, but the combined package is said to match the power of a V8.

The Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 4Matic+ depicted in the gallery has a 3.0-litre inline-six biturbo engine with 435hp and 520Nm of torque. The inline EQ Boost is offered here too, with a similar upgrade on both power and torque. The car also gets the AMG 9-speed Speedshift TCT gearbox and AMG performance 4Matic+.
