Audi to challenge Tesla with its new electric GT

0
As a sporty spearhead, the premium manufacturer announced at its annual press conference a highly dynamic, four-door Gran Turismo with purely electric drive. Production will start early in the coming decade at the Bˆllinger Hˆfe site near Neckarsulm. ìWe interpret sportiness very progressively with our fully electric e-tron GT, and this is how we will take our high-performance brand Audi Sport into the future,î says Stadler.

Volkswagen Audi Group has spelled out their electrification plans across the various brands. Top priority in sedan category as of now goes to Porsche Mission E followed by Audi for its e-tron SUV in a span of 24 months.

While this is happening, further developments at Audi suggest that it will also get to produce an all-electric sporty sedan which when launched will take on the likes of Tesla’s volume seller S model.  Audi has just released a teaser of the proposed Audi Sport e-tron GT at its annual media briefing in Ingolstadt, Germany. The e-tron GT was presented as a future product specifically from the performance-oriented Audi Sport sub-brand.

At the meeting the company said the car will be built at the Böllinger Höfe specialist plant that now assembles the Audi R8 supercar. This suggests the Audi e-tron GT may be low in volume but high in performance.

Former head of Audi Sport Stefan Winkelman had suggested the sub-brand would have its own electric car with coupe styling, whether an SUV or a sedan. The announcement confirms the decision came in favour of a sedan. No further details of underpinnings or powertrain set-up were made available.
