Jorge Lorenzo is on a roll. Coming on the heels of his announced switch to Repsol Honda next season, Catalunya turned out to be his stamp of excellence. Starting on pole with Marc Marquez just off to his right, the race was also meant to extend Andrea Dovizioso’s challenge to the Honda rider, but that didn’t work out.

In the melee of the start, Marquez took the hole shot with Lorenzo looking like he was off pace, with even Andrea Iannone managing to leap ahead into second. But that was only for one lap. Once he got his pace, Lorenzo overtook both of them to get into the lead, a lead he was then to maintain for the rest of the race.

Dovizioso managed to get up behind Marquez but the challenge for the championship did not last long – Dovi crashed out on the ninth lap, marking his third DNF of the season.

By now, both Lorenzo and Marquez had opened up a lead, with the Yamaha of Valentino Rossi trailing in third. That’s how the three ended the race, with Lorenzo having opened up a further gap on Marquez. Cal Crutchlow pulled in fourth after having battled Marquez’ team mate Dani Pedrosa through the second half of the race. Pedrosa’s fifth spot was a huge consolation for him, considering the season he has had till now. Maverick Viñales brought up the sixth spot.

Jorge Lorenzo commented post-race, “Today’s win was really fantastic! We showed that we can win not only by entering the first turn in first place, but also by recovering and overtaking the others. It was actually a complicated race because I got off to a bad start and lost a lot of metres to Marquez, but I told myself that the race was long and I had to keep calm. It wasn’t too difficult to take Marc, because I had that little bit extra under braking, but he stayed pretty close to me right down to the flag. Now we’ve got a very competitive package and I think that this is the most complete Ducati bike of all time: both Dovi and I this weekend have always been competitive. We must capitalize on this situation because the Desmosedici works well at virtually every track, it doesn’t consume the tyres too much, and this is a big advantage. Now let’s enjoy this win and then we’ll think about the next race.”
