Marc Marquez took his ninth consecutive victory at the German GP, six of these being in the MotoGP class. And the two Yamaha riders Valentino Rossi and Maverick Viñales made up the remaining podium spots in an exciting race at Sachsenring.

Marquez started off on pole with Danilo Petrucci on his Alma Pramac on second and Jorge Lorenzo on his Ducati in third. But a terrific start by Lorenzo saw him muscle his way into the holeshot, with Marquez being pushed aside and finding himself behind Petrucci. Rossi managed to catapult himself into fourth from his sixth place on the grid, followed by Viñales.

Lorenzo out front used the power of his Ducati to set a quick turn of pace, but it didn’t take long for Marquez to get ahead of petrucci and begin to pressure the leader. Rossi too got ahead of the Alma Pramac rider. Cal Crutchlow on his LCR Honda crashed out – and Marquez found his opportunity attacking the Ducati ahead and overtaking him. It looked like Lorenzo was struggling a bit and that was proved as Rossi hauled him in and overtook the Spaniard.

That set the tone for the finish with Marquez and Rossi clearly set. But the third spot was still a battle as Petrucci tried to overtake Lorenzo – but it was Viñales on his Yamaha who managed to catch up with the duo and then brilliantly get ahead of them.

As if Lorenzo’s woes weren’t done, Alvaro Bautista from the Angel Nieto team took fifth ahead of him. Dani Pedrosa on the other Repsol Honda brought in a decent eighth behind Andrea Dovizioso on the second Ducati.

Marquez remarked in his post-race interview, “Of course I’m very happy, as nine wins in a row here is incredible! But every year the pressure increases, because beginning on Thursday, everyone starts asking about winning on Sunday! Anyway, we have the experience to handle that as well. Today I expected the race to have different phases, with the first tyre drop happening after around nine laps and a final one seven to five laps from the end. I was prepared to manage the different situations, but in the beginning it wasn’t easy because my start wasn’t perfect. I expected that Lorenzo might pass me but not Petrucci. I lost two positions and then overtaking them wasn’t easy. When I did it, I started to push in order to pull a gap but without being ‘crazy’ so that I could manage the tyre consumption until the end of the race.”
