Vettel gets win and championship lead at Silverstone despite Hamilton recovery

Silverstone July 8th

Sebastian Vettel got off to a dream start at Silverstone, while Ferrari team mate Kimi Raikkonen bumped into Lewis Hamilton who had started on pole but encountered wheel spin that let the number 5 Ferrari go ahead to take the lead followed by Valtteri Bottas. The nudge spun Hamilton and put him at the tail of the field, with a feeling that his car was compromised. Despite a major charge back, he never recovered, with the race ending with Vettel ahead of Hamilton’s second and Raikkonen bringing up the third podium spot.

Hamilton had issues with his car, suggesting that there was something wrong with the floor after the contact. Raikkonen was penalised ten seconds for the event, with Hamilton suggesting post race that it might have been part of a Ferrari strategy, despite it being from an obvious lock-up.

Hamilton’s charge back up the order saw him recover places to land up in sixth spot after 16 laps, almost 30 seconds off Vettel. Raikkonen served out his 10 second penalty when he came in for medium tyres on the 13th lap, with a quick performance gain that saw him put in better times than Vettel.

Marcus Ericsson then crashed out, serving up a situation that almost saw the Mercs pull off the lead. The two Ferraris and Red Bulls used the safety car period to change tyres, putting Bottas in the lead. But that really didn’t help as Vettel who was being held off in second managed a quick manoeuvre ahead with barely five laps to go and Hamilton followed suit soon after. Finally it was up to Raikkonen to manage the last insult, finishing third, while Ricciardo brought in his Red Bull in fifth. Alonso managed some more points with his ninth place finish.

Sebastian Vettel said, “ The new updates that we brought here have worked very well through the whole weekend. In qualifying we were just a little bit slower, but during the race it was just great. The Safety Car made everything more exciting, but even more tricky. However, the strategy with the tyres was great and at the end we got a fantastic win as a team. I really enjoyed this race and I am happy for me and for the team. Also, the start was very important for us and it was great. Now it’s important to keep working. I say thanks to the whole team for this win!”
