Toyota Oman, represented by importer Saud Bahwan Automotive, launched the all-new Toyota RAV4 in Oman. Marking a departure from the nameplate’s soft-SUV background, the new Toyota RAV4 features styling and a driver package that is decidedly more aggressive, with a variant on offer called Adventure.
Speaking on the occasion Mr. Yugo Miyamoto said, “In 1994, Toyota’s launch of the 1st generation RAV4 introduced a new kind of car to the world, one that combined the go-anywhere performance and rugged stance of an SUV with compact dimensions and handling more akin to a hatchback. Over the past 4 generations, RAV4 continued evolving to meet changing customer needs and at the same time, never compromising on driving dynamics, fuel economy, comfort and reliability. Always pursuing the very best. The RAV4 offered a blend of Adventure thanks to its SUV look and capability, and at the same time, an on-road performance similar to that of a passenger car. This has been the concept for the past 25 years. So it became essential for Toyota to redesign the All New RAV4 to meet the ever changing needs of the customers.”
With a completely reengineered platform, aggressive styling cues and the inclusion of features like a drive mode selector that factors in off-road driving, the all-wheel drive arrangement of the all-new Toyota RAV4 is now offered in a manner that exudes capability.
Highlighting what sets the new generation RAV4 apart, he said, “For the All New RAV4 to lead the SUV segment again for the next 25 years we have developed the new RAV4 around the 3 pillars – “see”, “ride”, and “drive”. The All New RAV4 has adopted new technologies and safety specs starting from 3 new technologies relating to 4WD. Firstly, AWD Integrated Management, which is linked to the vehicle control system. The AWD Integrated Management, harmonises the vehicle’s engine, transmission, brakes and AWD system, to deliver superb handling and stability in both off-road and on-road conditions. On off-roads, the driver can select either rock & dirt or mud & sand mode using the multi-terrain switch, improving off-road ground covering ability and control performance. Torque allocation, which changes depending on driving and road conditions, are displayed on the multi-information display.”
To meet the demands of the range, Toyota has in effect offered three different AWD systems on the all-new Toyota RAV4, with the basic systems sending 50% of torque to the rear on demand. However, the top of the line system offered in the region is unique in that it is micro-managed to offer dynamic torque vectoring and active disconnect from the rear axle by using a ratchet-type dog clutch.
Miyamotosan went on to highlight this, “Second is the dynamic torque vectoring AWD equipped on all grades. This is a world first system where torque is independently distributed to the left and right rear wheels, allowing easy escape from tricky situations in poor off-road conditions, and superior cornering performance on-road. Third is the newly developed E-Four system on the HEV AWD model. This new E-Four system has 2 features. First one is on off-road, it provides powerful hill-climbing performance. Second is on on-road, it delivers high level of cornering stability.”
By the simultaneous launch of the all-new Toyota RAV4 HEV (hybrid) variant, the RAV4 now offers a conventional drive to the front-wheels while the motor assist serves to power the individual rear wheels, offering a completely new twist on AWD management.
Earlier in the evening, a representative from Saud Bahwan Automotive said, “Toyota, is one of the world’s most valuable brands. In a Toyota, we feel safe, confident and content. The engine is a new 2.5-litre unit that delivers 204hp and 243Nm of torque, mated with the new 8-speed Aisin automatic gearbox.
